Returning from vacation, Cari and Lauri Ryding were devastated to find their house had been egged and Pride flag stolen.

The couple from Natick, Massachusetts, had lived in the neighbourhood for years, so to experience homophobia in this way left them disillusioned and confused, Cari explained.

They had put up the flag just weeks earlier, in memory of the victims of the Orlando massacre that left 49 people dead after gunman Omar Mateen opened fire in Pulse nightclub.

Cari said it was there to be a symbol of love.

She went onto to explain that in the 23 years she has lived there, first with her husband and then with Lauri, she has never felt anything but unwavering support from her neighbours.

This incident had made her question that.

That was until…what happen next.

One by one, houses all around the neighbourhood began raising rainbow flags in solidarity with the couple.

Having contacted the Rainbow Peace Flag organisation, a group who give out free rainbow flags to the area, children in the street began delivering the flags before taking the last one to Cari and Lauri.

Within a few hours, 40 homes had raised the rainbow flag. Media attention has now seen hundred of people in the area and beyond ordering flags and joining the united front.
