Unfortunately the news about the lesbian Brokeback Mountain sequel isn’t real

If you have been getting excited for the past few days about that lesbian Brokeback Mountain sequel, you have unfortunately been duped by a hoax.

A news article published on the very satirical Portly Gazette claimed that Emma Watson and Margot Robbie had signed up to play lesbians in Brokeback Mountain 2, and that the film was confirmed for 2017.

Not realising the site is satirical, and has a disclaimer on every page saying so, many took to social media to celebrate the news.

The film, if real, would be a sequel to the 2006 Ang Lee hit starring Jake Gyllenhaal and late actor Heath Ledger.

According to the Portly Gazette: “The film will follow two lesbian lovers in rural USA and will retain most of the themes of the original film, aside from the obvious gender switch,

“Mega-stars Margot Robbie and Emma Watson have been cast to play the two lesbians struggling to compromise their secret lesbian relationship with their intolerant surroundings.”

Given the many, many people who took to Twitter using the hashtag #Brokeback2, perhaps someone should pick up the idea and run with it.

Earlier this year Gyllenhaal opened up about the death of his Brokeback Mountain co-star Heath Ledger.

The pair appeared as ill-fated lovers in the Oscar-winning 2005 drama, which has widely been credited with bringing gay cinema into the mainstream and sparking a wave of LGBT film-making.

Heath Ledger died in 2008 after an accidental drug overdose, aged just 28.
