LGBT allies Chris Mears and Jack Laugher win historic diving gold for Great Britain

Chris Mears has proven that being an ally to the LGBT community is not only the right thing to do but that it makes him a better diver.

Perhaps not, but Mears made history today as he and diving partner Jack Laugher won team GB’s first ever gold in 3-metre springboard diving.

The medal was GB’s third overall at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The pair scuppered team China’s hopes of winning a clean sweep of golds in diving at Rio as they scored a 454.32 total.

They braved the mysteriously green pool to beat the Chinese who got bronze and USA who got silver.

Both divers have appeared separately on covers of various gay magazines and have been strong allies to the LGBT community.

Laugher back in 2013 said he wouldn’t have a problem being a gay athlete and that “everyone should feel comfortable to be gay”, in an interview with GT (available here).

He made the comments as he posed for the cover of GT.

Mears also his friendship with fellow diver Tom Daley now means he has several gay friends.

He said he wanted to steal Daley’s gay fanbase as he posed naked for the cover of GT.

Mears has posed topless on the front cover of this month’s Gay Times (GT) as part of its charity ‘naked’ issue.
