Joe Williams August 9, 2016

A rugby player was proposed to by her girlfriend following rugby finals at the Rio de Janeiro games.

A women’s rugby sevens player has become the first athlete to receive a marriage proposal at the Rio Olympic Games from her girlfriend.

Isadora Cerullo – one of over 40 LGBT athletes competing in the event – was a member of the Brazil squad that narrowly missed out on reaching the knockout rounds.

However, despite her team losing out to Australia, Cerullo soon had a reason to celebrate.

Following the first women’s rugby sevens final ever to take place at the games, Olympics history was made yet again when her girlfriend took to the pitch.

Marjorie Enya – a manager at Deodoro Stadium – grabbed a microphone, before delivering an emotional speech to her girlfriend.

As Cerullo accepted Enya’s proposal, the pair embrace to whoops and cheers from the crowd.

“As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special,” Enya told BBC Sport.

“I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it.”

She added that she was not nervous about proposing to Cerullo, who she described as “the love of my life.”

“The Olympic Games can look like closure but for me it’s starting a new life with someone.

“I wanted to show people that love wins.”

The couple have been together for two years and moved to São Paulo so Cerullo could focus on making the women’s rugby sevens squad for the Games.

This year’s Olympic games features a record number of out LGBT athletes, with an estimated 42 LGBT athletes set to compete.

This is nearly double the 23 openly LGBT athletes who took part in the London 2012 games.

The LGBT athletes come from 13 different countries, spanning 6 continents, with the highest number coming from Great Britain.
