Hillary Clinton visits Orlando Pulse, promises to make changes to protect LGBT+ people

Joseph McCormick July 22, 2016

Hillary Clinton has visited the Orlando Pulse nightclub to pay her condolences a month after 49 people were killed in a mass shooting at the venue.

The Democratic Presidential hopeful laid a bouquet of flowers at the club on Friday.

She was also joined by Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer and Senator Bill Nelson, and spoke with first responders at the site of the shooting.

Mrs Clinton hugged Dyer before she left the site.

Earlier on Friday, Mrs Clinton met with community leaders at a roundtable event, at which she promised to “promote the kinds of changes that will prevent this from happening to other people, other families, and other communities.”

“We have to be willing to stand as one and demand changes from lawmakers at the federal, state and local level… We have a lot of work ahead of us,” she added.

Dyer also called for togetherness, saying: “We need to better understand how we come together, that we are stronger when we appreciate the similarities that we have and don’t focus on the differences.”

“The Latino LGBT community, by any measure, is the community that was most severely impacted by this terrible attack,” Clinton continued.

“What does that mean? Well among other things, it means that it is still dangerous to be LGBT in America.”

On Thursday night, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed he’ll do “everything in his power” to protect LGBT people – despite his actively anti-LGBT stances.

The reality TV star-turned-Presidential hopeful made the comments in his acceptance speech after officially becoming the Republican candidate for President.

In the speech he claimed to be a champion of the LGBT community in the wake of the Orlando massacre – after previously suggesting a Clinton victory would lead to the mass murder of gays.
