Sebastian Stan (Bucky) has finally spoken out about giving Captain America a boyfriend.

The trend started on twitter after fans of the Marvel character urged for Captain America’s best friend Bucky to become his boyfriend.

Superhero studios like Marvel and DC have been criticised for not having LGBT characters featured in their films.

Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky in the new Captain America film spoke to GQ about the trend.

Stan believes movies are there to act as something that people can relate to. “Look, man, I think it’s great. Movies are for people to relate to in whatever way they want.” he said

“No one here is ever going to point a finger and say what’s right and wrong. For me, it’s like, Awww. It’s cute, it’s great.”

Stan doesn’t think of Bucky in that way, but supports people’s own interpretation of the character.

“If someone takes the time to think about that, that’s great. I don’t think of the character that way, though. But there’s no right or wrong answer,” he said.

Director Joe Russo defined the characters relationship as a fraternal love story: “These are two guys who grew up together, and so they have that same emotional connection to each other as brothers would, and even more so because Bucky was all Steve had growing up,”

However Russo hopes that Marvel will introduce more sexually diverse characters in the future.
“I think the chances are strong,” he said. “I mean, it’s incumbent upon us as storytellers who are making mass-appeal movies to make mass-appeal movies, and to diversify as much as possible.”
Studios have been accused of stripping some characters, including Mystique, Catwoman and Iceman, of their sexuality.

The Shape History Campaign recently released a trailer featuring a same sex superhero following the give Captain America a boyfriend trend on twitter.
