HBO has dropped the trailer for Looking: The Movie, which stars Jonathan Groff, Frankie J Alvarez and Russell Tovey.

Previously an HBO series, Looking lasted just 18 episodes across two seasons before facing the axe in March last year.

HBO president Michael Lombardo told the Television Critics Association that it was personally “very painful” for him to cancel the show.

Dubbed the gay ‘Girls’, the TV drama followed a group of gay friends living in San Francisco. Following its cancellation, HBO promised to make a film, which would serve as the finale.

HBO said previously: “After two years of following Patrick and his tight-knit group of friends as they explored San Francisco in search of love and lasting relationships, HBO will present the final chapter of their journey as a special. We look forward to sharing this adventure with the shows loyal fans.”

The film is seemingly picking up a few years after the show left off, with Patrick (Groff) returning to California after moving to Colorado to confront his past. Meanwhile, Agustín (Alvarez) is about to commit to a relationship, but he’s terrified.

Looking was earlier commended for dealing with a number of topical issues such as PrEP, substance abuse and hook-up apps.

Meanwhile, the showrunner behind the series is creating a new biopic based on the life of fashion icon Alexander McQueen.

Six years on from his death, a biopic based on McQueen’s life – with Looking director Andrew Haigh taking the lead – is set to go into production.

Looking: The Movie premieres on Saturday 23 July at 10pm on HBO. Watch the trailer below:
