Now, fans of the show will be delighted to see the movie version officially confirmed.

Universal has announced that the long-awaited movie adaptation of Wicked will arrive on December 20, 2019 – meaning cinema goers will be able to defy gravity just in time for Christmas!

Stephen Daldry will direct the movie, while ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ writer Gregory Maguire will also work on the film.

Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who worked on the Broadway show, will collaborate on the project as well.

Although the cast is yet to be announced, fans hoping to see original stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel reprise the lead roles will be disappointed – after the pair were told they are “over age”.

However, that didn’t stop the pair treating fans to a surprise reunion recently.

Chenoweth and Menzel came together again to do a duet of the song ‘For Good’ from the famed musical.

The pair performed the song as part of the ‘Out of Oz: Studio Sessions‘ in honour of Wicked producer, David Stone.

Fans all over the world were delighted to see the pair reunite – the last time they performed together was in 2004.

Earlier this year, Schwartz said he will not allow the show to be performed anywhere in North Carolina until the state repeals its anti-LGBT law.

Last Christmas, a performance of the show – which has a garnered a huge LGBT fanbase – saw two of Oz’s flying monkeys get engaged in front of delighted fellow cast members.
