Sam Smith has returned to Twitter to pay tribute to the victims of the horrific Orlando mass shooting.

The singer had temporarily quit Twitter following his Oscars win earlier this year.

However, he used the social media platform to post a message in the wake of the devastating shooting.

“My heart is broken,” he wrote. “Let people be people, let’s love together. The world is with you, Orlando.”

The singer decided to take some time away from the spotlight earlier this year, signing off of Twitter after spats with film-maker Dustin Lance Black and Clean Bandit musician Neil Amin-Smith.

Amin-Smith launched a stinging attack on Smith following his Oscars speech, branding some of his previous comments about equality as “monstrous”.

Black, who won an Oscar for his acclaimed biopic Milk, called Smith out for “texting my fiancé” – Olympic diver Tom Daley.

Smith attempted to smooth things over, adding: “I’m logging off for a while. Some Martinis shaken not stirred are definitely in order.”

Meanwhile, Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney, 73, showed his solidarity at a concert in Berlin on Tuesday night, appearing with a large rainbow flag.

His tribute comes after Lady Gaga made an appearance at a vigil for the victims of the massacre in LA, dressed in an uncharacteristically low-key outfit in deference to the tragedy.

By stark contrast, Liam Gallagher sparked outrage with a homophobic tweet following Orlando attack.

50 people were killed and 53 injured in the shocking terrorist hate crime attack over the weekend, which saw a gunman open fire inside The Pulse gay bar in Orlando, Florida.
