Listen: Cyndi Lauper rewrites Kinky Boots song as pro-trans bathroom protest

Cyndi Lauper has re-written a song from gender-busting musical Kinky Boots to support trans equality.

The music legend penned the music for the musical, which features a traditional old shoe factory decide to manufacture boots for drag queens.

Lauper joined writer  Harvey Fierstein and the cast of the Broadway version of the show today to film a re-hashed version of original song ‘Just Be’.

The new version, ‘Just Pee’, hits back at attacks from conservative anti-LGBT groups, who have attempted to roll back crucial LGBT rights protections across the US in order to ban transgender women from female toilets.

The re-written lyrics affirm: “Just pee where you wanna pee! Never let ’em tell you who you ought to be!

“I’m me! I don’t need ID. Don’t tell me who I am and where I ought to be.”

The video for the track sees the entire cast of Kinky Boots having a party in a bathroom during intermission.

Lauper explains: “Ladies, gentlemen, and those who have yet to make up their minds… there’s been a lot of crazy talk about people using bathrooms for things other than prescribed by the Plumbers’ Union of America.

“All we’re asking for is a little sanity. People have to pee!”

Lauper plans to perform the song at upcoming shows in North Carolina – while she will also donate pofits to LGBT rights group Equality North Carolina to fight the state’s ‘bathroom’ law.

As luck would have it there is already an entire Broadway musical about the people fighting back against oppressive rules regarding bathroom usage… but it’s nice to have another song for the collection.

More than a million people people have joined an online ‘boycott’ of superstore chain Target led by the anti-LGBT American Family Association, after the store confirmed that transgender people were able to use their preferred bathroom.

Since the action began, a string of protesters have taken to disrupting Target stores directly – with one woman waved a Bible while warning customers “the devil will rape your children”, a man shouting about homosexual “abominations”, and an incident that sparked an ‘active shooter’ lockdown.
