Indian designer Sharmila Nair has created a new sari collection inspired by and for India’s trans community.

Sharmila is hoping that the clothing line will encourage other designers to welcome and celebrate trans women, Metro reports.

The collection from Red Lotus is called Mazhavil, which translates to rainbow, and it uses bright, vivid colours.

Sharmila was aided by local LGBT organisation Queerela to hire two trans models to star in the collection’s campaign.

Models Maya Menon and Gowri Savithri were hesitant to accept the job to begin with, but were soon excited to be part of the campaign.

“I had always loved wearing a sari, but couldn’t do so in public for a long time,” Maya told International Business Times, adding: “This shoot was extra-special to me.”

I could never have imagined that I’d look so beautiful. I have no words to thank Sharmila for the opportunity she gave us,” Maya told The News Minute.

Meanwhile, a new transgender model is hitting the catwalks, and is set to be a huge star.

Siobhan Atwell, according to Vogue, is “about to take over the industry”.

At the beginning of her modelling career, Atwell posed for both men’s and women’s shoots, taking a leaf out of fellow-trans model Andreja Pejic’s book.

But having decided to transition to female, she spoke to Vogue about her inspirations, and where she draws her strength from.

Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg recently announced that her new trans reality show will air later this year.

Strut will follow the day-to-day lives of a group of trans fashion models.

Focusing on Slay Model Management, the show will tell the story of the world’s first exclusively transgender modelling agency, People reports.

“This show is important right now, because for all of the positive advances the community has made and continues to make, transgender is still a hot-button word that gets people hysterical,” Goldberg in a statement.
