Rufus Wainwright can’t decide if Benedict Cumberbatch is hot or not

Joe Williams May 14, 2016

The singer met Cumberbatch during the BBC’s The Shakespeare Show: Recorded Live from the Royal Shakespeare Company recently.

Wainwright says that while he was left impressed by the actor’s obvious talent, he couldn’t quite decide how he felt about his looks.

“I’ve hung out with Benedict a couple of times. He’s quite the figure”, he told PrideSource.

“Most amazing thing is, I can’t tell if he’s gorgeous or incredibly ugly. It’s a weird combination.

“At certain angles he looks like my aunt, and then at certain angles he looks the man who’s gonna ruin my marriage.”

Wainwright went to admit that he is a shameless flirt and likes to flirt with men – “straight or gay.”

“I’m just built that way,” he says. “I’m sort of a gay Elizabeth Taylor.”

The singer has previously admitted that he he feels fortunate to not have a large gay fan base, because “gay men have terrible taste in music”.

However, he added: “I try to write more pop stuff now than I did when I was younger. I have become really interested in what makes a pop song tick.”

In 2010, he said he “knew” American rapper 50 Cent was gay.

“It’s okay, 50 Cent. Feel free to call me anytime. My boyfriend and I are experts.

“You can come over for dinner. And maybe dessert.”

Cumberbatch, meanwhile, won praise for his portrayal of gay code breaker Alan Turing in 2014’s The Imitation Game.

However, the actor also attracted criticism after he defended the absence of gay sex in the film, saying: “If you need to see that to understand that he’s gay, then all is lost for any kind of subtle storytelling. It’s not something that needed to be made obvious.

Despite the controversy, and only having a limited release in the US, the film made the second highest per-screen profit of 2014.
