Trans woman plans to tour men’s bathrooms in North Carolina

A transgender woman is standing up to North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law, by travelling the state in a tour of men’s bathrooms.

Shakina Nayfack, a trans actress and writer from New York, announced the plan via Twitter in April.

Ms Nayfack plans to show the ridiculousness of HB2, which forces trans people to use the bathroom that matches their gender at birth, by taking selfies in bathrooms around the state and tweeting about her experience.

She told the Guardian: “They are trying to create a situation where trans people are supposed to be invisible. This is an absurd, panicked reaction from the ignorant, it’s a massive step backwards, so I felt it was my duty to go down there and take selfies in as many men’s bathrooms as possible.”

Responding to a joke on social media, she added she was surprised when people took it seriously.

“When I heard about HB2 I posted that I wanted to go down there and piss in all the ‘wrong’ restrooms and someone posted ‘I would totally crowdfund that’, so the next day I launched the new campaign,” she said.

Ms Nayfack will travel to bathrooms in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Asheville, Flat Rock, Charlotte and Fayetteville.

She’ll also be performing shows throughout the state, as well as visiting the bathrooms.

“HB2 is ridiculous, it means trans people either have to go in places where we risk being subject to violence, or at least making people uncomfortable,” she said.

“Depending on what the legislature does, it will either be a demonstration or a celebration tour.”

Recently, comedy band, Axis of Awesome, used a song to explain that their lead singer was transgender.

The Obama administration also announced that they would seek to sue “state sponsored discrimination”.
