The heart of Liverpool’s gay scene is getting a Wizard of Oz-inspired makeover – just in time for Pride.

Eberle Street, which is home to the Garlands and G-Bar nightclubs, is getting an Emerald City makeover that references Judy Garland’s most iconic role.

Friends of Dorothy will be welcomed down a newly-transformed ‘Yellow Brick Road’ complete with a number of artistic touches, including Dorothy’s iconic red slippers and a rainbow.

The work, which has been funded by Liverpool BID Company representing local businesses and Liverpool city council, is expected to be finished just in time for the city’s Pride parade in July.

Jim Gill of the Commercial District BID said: “The Eberle Street scheme is a real highlight of this programme of works and I’ve no doubt it will prove to be a great attraction when it is completed.”

Liverpool BID exec Bill Addy added: “We’ve been delighted with the improvements made so far in the commercial district and the feedback from the business community and the public has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The Eberle Street scheme has required a great level of thought and design and the fact that local businesses have had a great amount of input has been hugely gratifying.”

The works are part of a £1.6m investment aimed at improving the area for pedestrians.
