Mariah Carey to be honoured at GLAAD Media Awards
Mariah Carey is to be honoured at the 27 GLAAD Media awards next month.
The ‘We Belong Together’ singer, who is considered a gay icon, will be honoured on 14 May a the annual event in New York City.
Carey will be presented with the Ally Award, which is presented to “a media figure who has consistently used their platform to support and advance LGBT equality and acceptance.”
Director Lee Daniels will present Carey with the award at the event at the Waldorf Astoria.
“Through her music and outspoken support, Mariah Carey has inspired and empowered countless LGBT fans across the globe,” GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.
“She is a longtime ally and friend to the LGBT community who has worked tirelessly to move acceptance and inclusion forward.”
Others who have received GLAAD Awards include Cher, Elizabeth Taylor and Janet Jackson.
The event will be hosted by Laverne Cox.
Carey paid tribute to late superstar Prince at a concert in Paris this week.
She said: “I didn’t know if I was able to come out here and put on a show and be festive, but I said, ‘I’m in Paris and that’s what Prince would want me to do.’ To get through it rather than just make everything bleak, we need to take this and honor this.”
“He was a friend to me, too, and he talked me through some times I really, really needed somebody. He was an incredible person if you never got to meet him,” Carey went on.
“I’m sure his music has touched every single person in here, so let’s have a moment of silence for Prince.”
After a moments silence, she dedicated ‘One Sweet Day’ to the singer, adding: “It’s a very sad day… but we remember the life of somebody who will always be treasured.”
Prince died earlier this week, aged 57 at his home in Minnesota.
