‘Charlotte’ wants to leave North Carolina after anti-LGBT law passed
The ‘city of Charlotte’ plans to move to a new state after North Carolina passed anti-LGBT legislation… sort of.
Last month North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed law which voids all local ordinances protecting LGBT rights, as well as permitting businesses to discriminate against LGBT people on the grounds of religious belief.
The new law also bans transgender students in public schools from using their preferred bathroom.
McCrory’s decision has attracted a legal challenge as well as a growing boycott of the state, with over 100 companies slamming the decision.
A Craigslist ad posted earlier this week poses as Charlotte, which was the centre of a controversy around the state’s new law.
Charlotte had passed a local law protecting the rights of trans people to use a gender-appropriate bathroom.
But the state law, passed after a special session was called, voided the Charlotte ordinance.
The funny, but quite true ad reads: “My name is Charlotte and I’m looking for a new state in which to reside.
“My current state, North Carolina, has proven unsuitable and I will be needing approximately 297.7 sq/miles as soon as it becomes available. Anywhere in the contiguous 48 states will do.”
The ad also lays into North Carolina for the law, saying: “Requirements include basic tolerance for other humans, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation. By recognizing all people as having equal rights, I’m hoping to not only foster an environment of love/acceptance but also keep major events and not deter large national companies from operating here.
“As for me, I’m clean, attractive and accommodating. I have many independent sources of income and am constantly focused on improving myself to create a better tomorrow. Young people really take to me. I love sports — especially NASCAR — the financial industry, and hanging out in Freedom Park.
“Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you are a state with common human decency interested in adding me. Serious inquiries only.”
Yesterday it was announced that Lionsgate-produced Hulu comedy pilot ‘Crushed’ will be moved out of the state.
A statement from internet payment giant Paypal earlier this month announced that a planned new HQ in the state would be scrapped.
PayPal CEO Dan Schulman explained he could not move to the state in good conscience. Governor McCrory had previously personally championed the opening of the HQ.
