Ted Cruz double-dares Trump to sue him over ‘liberal values’ attack ad
Republican Presidential hopeful Ted Cruz has dared Donald Trump to sue him over an ad attacking Trump’s so-called ‘liberal’ values on marriage.
Senator Cruz is militantly opposed to LGBT rights and same-sex marriage, while Donald Trump is only extremely opposed to LGBT rights and same-sex marriage.
Following the death of Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia, Senator Cruz launched an ad in South Carolina, claiming that Trump “can’t be trusted” on marriage, religious liberty and abortion due to his “liberal” values.
The ad claims: “Life, marriage, religious liberty, the second amendment… we’re just one Supreme Court justice away from losing them all. We cannot trust Donald Trump with these serious decisions.”
It plays a clip of Trump declining to weigh in on partial-birth abortion, saying: “I’m very pro-choice… I am pro-choice in every respect”.
Mr Trump’s lawyers issued a cease-and-desist letter in a bid to stop Ted Cruz from airing the ad – but Senator Cruz spoke out and dared Trump to sue him.
He said: “Mr Trump will seek immediate legal action to prevent the continued broadcast of this ad, and to hold me jointly reliable to the fullest extent of the law for any damages resulting there-from.
“I have to say to Mr Trump… you have been threatening frivolous lawsuits for your entire adult life, but even in the annals of frivolous lawsuits this takes the cake.
“Donald, I would encourage you – if you want to file a lawsuit challenging this ad, claiming it is defamation, file a lawsuit.
“It is a remarkable contention that an ad that plays video of Donald Trump speaking on national television is somehow defamation.”
Of course, Iowa Republican Steve King suggested an out-of-court remedy to the pair’s squabbling.
He said: “We don’t use that word [liar] where I come from, because when you make that kind of allegation, we look back at our founding fathers, for example, and realize that Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton fought a duel to the death over such allegations.”
Speaking to a right-wing radio host recently, Mr Trump appeared to pander to the theory that Justice Scalia was murdered.
Mr Trump said: “I’m hearing it’s a big topic, the question… it’s a horrible topic.”
