It seems that Sam Smith has only just realised that racism still exists – seriously.

Sam Smith clearly does not get out much, after he shared his “deep shock” upon discovering that racism is still alive and well on the streets of London.

The singer told how his friend was at the receiving end of some racial abuse, taking to Twitter to tell followers that he was left “speechless” by the altercation.

“I never, ever, ever, ever thought that would happen here,” Smith wrote.

“Absolutely speechless and hurt. I feel like I have to shine some sort of light on it.

“The police were so unhelpful in the situation, and it’s deeply shocked me. Humans are HUMANS.”

Fellow users were quick to ridicule the star’s dismay, with one ‘fan’ accusing him of ‘whitesplaining’, while another said he needs “a reality check.”

However, this isn’t the first time Smith has attempted to “shine light” on an issue.

The singer has said his songs could be “changing opinions” in countries where being gay could get you killed – despite never mentioning male lovers in his lyrics.

Smith sparked criticism last year when he said he was “not trying to be a spokesperson” for the gay community.

He also previously defended only singing about gender-neutral “lovers” to ensure his songs are universal and “apply to everyone” – though straight male singers sing about girlfriends all the time.
