Tunisian Government suspends LGBT rights group
A Tunisian LGBT rights group has been told by the country’s government to suspend operations for 30 days.
The Shams charity was told that it was suspended by the government based on non-compliance with the law.
Hedi Sahli, the president of Shams, said it was sanctioned under Article 45, which governs organisations.
The charity seeks to repeal Article 230 of the Tunisian Penal Code, which criminalises gay sex.
Its suspension by the government was announced on its Facebook page.
Last month the secretary general of the Tunisian government, Ahmed Zarrouk, requested that Shams be dissolved.
The charity was only officially registered for the first time on 18 May.
In December a demonstration for the recognition of the human rights of LGBT people was blocked by the government.
