This hardware store’s gay Christmas ad is the weirdest thing you’ll see today
Have you ever watched an advert… and been entirely unsure whether it’s a spoof or not?
Well – the latest Christmas advert for hardware chain Robert Dyas has left the internet scratching its collective heads.
The ad, which features staff and customers at the store discussing their sexuality, was quietly put out on the chain’s official Facebook page this week – and we’re unsure if it’s a parody, or the most earnest advert ever.
An employee says: “Hi, my name’s Marcus. I work at Robert Dyas and I’m gay.”
Stood between cafetières and minions, he continues: “I like going out with my friends and playing volleyball. I also like showing our gay and straight customers a funky range of our Christmas gifts.”
“I’m bisexual,” volunteers an impassioned woman clutching a German-language spiralizer, “and I always find something I love at Robert Dyas”.
“I’m gay,” a man holding a miniature light-up Christmas tree declares, “…and I love shopping at Robert Dyas”.
Robert Dyas, viewers are subsequently informed, is a place where “gays and straights can buy drills and much much more”.
Going by the online comments, the reaction to the ad has generally been one of confusion – with some wondering “just what the f*** is going on?”
Another commenter joked: “And there was me thinking gay people had their own range of appliances and shopped in secret, out of town centres.”
Some had other questions, too. Are transgender people welcome? What about ethnic minorities and disabled people? Perhaps another advert is needed.
