Sam Smith shows off new gay equality tattoo

Sam Smith has showed off a new tattoo on his wedding finger, to celebrate equal marriage.

The Leave Your Lover singer took to Instagram this week, to show off his new inks.

He posted pictures of his four new tattoos – starting with an iconic equals sign on his ring finger.

The star explained: “First one – the equality sign on my wedding finger. This one’s pretty self explanatory. It shows my views on gay marriage and equality for all.”

He has a rotated version of the same symbol on the opposite hand.

He explained: “Second – this tattoo is inspired by one of the oldest tattoos ever found on a mummified body that was found buried alone in the ice.”

The singer continued: “Third – This is what I promise to be in my music. It’s what I live by. In the words of [Maria Mena] ‘Honesty is my God’.

“And lastly – this is just me being a melancholy twat haha. I do see it as a small positive thou… No longer lonely… Just alone… Which is ok x thought I’d share these with you because I love them.”

The singer recently recorded the theme song for the latest James Bond film Spectre.

Following on from the success of Bond theme Writing’s On The Wall, and his debut album In the Lonely Hour last year, Smith has announced he is taking a break from music.

Concluding his tour, he said: “I’ve been going now for three years nonstop and it feels right for me to just go home and just live my life and be a 23-year-old.”

The singer added that he hopes to find some romance in his time, off, saying: “My love life, the downs and ups, it never stops, so I’m always inspired by stuff like that, but it’d be good to spend some time dating.”

Smith recently said his songs could be ‘changing opinions’ in countries where being gay could get you killed – despite never mentioning male lovers in his lyrics.

He said: “I want to be a spokesperson. I want to be a figure in the gay community, who speaks for gay men.

“I sell records in countries where gay men get killed and that’s a big thing for me, because maybe one person in that country will pick up my album, realise it’s by a gay artist, and it might change their opinion.”
