David Cameron calls Trump’s ‘ban Muslims from US’ comments ‘divisive, unhelpful’

Joseph McCormick December 8, 2015

Prime Minister David Cameron has criticised Donald Trump for comments about a ban on Muslims entering the US.

The US presidential hopeful has called for a ban on Muslims entering the US, after a shooting which took place in San Bernadino.

A campaign statement from the Republican called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on”.

In an unusual move for a UK Prime Minister, Mr Cameron has called Trump’s suggestion of a ban “divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong”.

Following the shooting which killed 14, Trump made the comments, but Mr Cameron’s office said he “completely disagrees with Donald Trump”.

A spokeswoman told the BBC: “The Prime Minister has been very clear that, as we look at how we tackle extremism and this poisonous ideology, what politicians need to do is look at ways they can bring communities together and make clear that these terrorists are not representative of Islam and indeed what they are doing is a perversion of Islam.”

Mr Cameron is not the only one to criticise Trump for the comments – Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson also tweeted her disgust at the suggestion.

She wrote: “So, twitter, we’re all agreed? Trump’s a clay-brained guts, knotty-pated fool, whoreson obscene greasy tallow-catch, right?”

Other Republican presidential hopefuls have also commented on the words by Trump – Jeb Bush called him “unhinged” for the suggestion.

The Republican frontrunner has been branded a “dangerous extremist” by opponents for his claims – after saying that Muslim-Americans should be forced to wear ID badges, while foreign Muslims are banned from travelling to the US altogether.

But he’s not the only worrying candidate running, as these other comments prove.
