You won’t believe what this music industry boss said women can’t do
One of the most powerful men in the music industry has apologised for making an outrageous comment about women and music.
Jimmy Iovine, one of the co-founders of Interscope Records and Beats by Dre, made the ridiculous comments in an interview with CBS’s This Morning, talking about Apple Music.
He holds an unspecified position at Apple following the company’s $3bn acquisition of Beats in May 2014.
Speaking in an interview with Gayle King that women “find it difficult… to find music.”
He said: “I just thought of a problem: Girls are sitting around talking about boys. Or complaining about boys, when they have their heart broken or whatever. And they need music for that, right? It’s hard to find the right music. Not everybody knows a DJ.
“I always knew that women find it very difficult at times – some women – to find music. And this helps makes it easier with playlists, curated by real people.”
The internet responded in kind, with anger and frustration.
Iovine has since apologised, saying he didn’t really mean what he said, and that he thinks men sometimes find it hard to find music too.
“We created Apple Music to make finding the right music easier for everyone – men and women, young and old,” he said.
“Our new ad focuses on women, which is why I answered the way I did, but of course the same applies equally for men. I could have chosen my words better, and I apologise.”
He claims the comments were “taken out of context”.
