Boo hoo, Kim Davis: Altered marriage licences still valid, Governor says
Despite her best efforts, Kim Davis has continued to fail to block the marriages of same-sex couples in Kentucky.
After spending five days in jail earlier this year for ignoring a string of court orders instructing her to allow gay couples to marry, the Rowan County Clerk returned to work.
However, on her return, she altered marriage licences issued to same-sex couples by her deputies, removing her name and the name of the county.
She claimed her religious beliefs gave her licence to turn down same-sex couples.
However, Democratic Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has said the marriage licences will be recognised.
This comes after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) asked a federal judge to force Davis to re-issue the marriage licences.
Beshear made the revelation in a court order, saying he believes they remain valid, despite Davis’ attempts to sabotage them.
US Roman Catholic bishops held an annual assembly on Monday where they gave a standing ovation to a Vatican ambassador who arranged a meeting between Pope Francis and Davis.
The new Governor-elect of Kentucky is a big fan of Kim Davis… and he’s already promised to re-write the state’s marriage laws for her.
