Attacker in notorious anti-gay murder to be released on parole
A man who was convicted in one of the most notorious anti-gay murders in US history will be released on parole.
Jon Buice, then 17, was one of ten men who attacked a 27-year-old banker Paul Broussard.
Broussard was killed in 1991
The mob fatally attacked Broussard in the Houston suburbs on 4 July 1991.
Buice struck the fatal blow, using a knife to stab Broussard, and received 45 years in prison.
All of the other nine attackers have been released already.
A decision was made by a committee on Friday to release Buice on parole, despite Broussard’s mother Nancy Rodriguez appearing multiple times urging the board to keep him locked away.
It is not clear when Buice will be released.
Gay rights advocates have said Buice shoud serve at least half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
He was originally granted parole in 2011, but the board reversed the decision following protests from LGBT groups.
Equality Texas which was opposed to Buice’s first parole in 2011 wrote on Facebook: “We can respect the decision of the parole board. Buice now has an opportunity to demonstrate that he truly is a changed man.”
