Ukrainian Parliament ‘will never support same-sex marriage’

The Ukrainian Parliament’s chairman has said that they will never support same-sex marriage.

Volodymyr Groysman, the chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, made the claim according to a statement on the Parliament’s website according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

During a debate on legislation that would outlaw LGBT based workplace discrimination Groysman was reported saying “You and we stand for family values.

“under no circumstances will there be same-sex marriages.”

The anti-discrimination bill passed the vote, but Groysman appeared to make it clear that this will not be the start of a move towards legalising same-sex marriage.

It is widely believed that the move to outlaw LGBT discrimination is due to Ukraine wishing to join The Schengen zone, which aims to bolster free trade across Europe and allows visa free access to the EU for Ukrainian citizens.

However, the European Union has made it clear that one of the prerequisites for Ukraine joining The Schengen Zone is an anti-LGBT discrimination law.

Ukraine has a history of rejecting LGBT people. A group of LGBT activists were attacked after holding a meeting after a planned pride march had been banned.
