Burt Jenner says he has always known that his father was trans.

Jenner came out as transgender in April this year in an interview earlier this year – and has since appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair and appeared in her own reality show.

However, although her transition may have surprised some of those closest to her, the former Olympian’s eldest son says he has known she was trans since his childhood.

“A lot of people don’t know that this is something that I’ve known now for, I think, 25 years,” he told Esquire.

After finding out about his father’s secret, Burt was sworn to secrecy.

However, the knowledge that he had a trans parent caused the race-car driver to become a staunch supporter of the LGBT community.

“Before I was allowed to tell anybody, or before my dad even knew that I knew, I went and marched on behalf of Prop 8 through the streets of Los Angeles,” he said.

“I’ve always tried to be an outspoken supporter of the LGBT community.”

He went on to say he was thrilled when Caitlyn was finally introduced to world – a moment he had been waiting for over twenty years to celebrate.

“I was very excited,” he says. “Part of me was screaming to say, ‘Hey, I’ve known for 25 years and I’ve always been supportive!’ I always will be.”

In further good news for the star, Glamour this week revealed she is being honoured as one of their Women of the Year.

Jenner will receive the honour on November 9, at Glamour’s 25th Anniversary Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

In a profile of Jenner for the Award, Glamour explained: “A year ago Caitlyn Jenner did not have a name.

“The Olympic hero turned reality-star patriarch was still living a phantom existence, her changing appearance igniting a tabloid frenzy around the rumour she’d run from for most of her 66 years: that she was transgender.”

It continues: “A year, an iconic Annie Leibovitz photograph, an Arthur Ashe Courage Award, and 4.5 million Instagram followers later, Jenner is finding new meaning in her life.”
