‘Will you say anything to get elected?’ Hillary Clinton challenged over equal marriage

Hillary Clinton was challenged over her U-turn on same-sex marriage during last night’s Democratic debate – asked if she would ‘say anything to get elected’.

The former Secretary of State is currently vying with Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democratic Party’s Presidential nomination ahead of the 2016 vote.

The Democrat was once a strong opponent on same-sex marriage, but came out in favour of it in 2013.

News anchor Anderson Cooper challenged her during last night’s Democratic debate, saying: “Secretary Clinton… plenty of politicians evolve on issues, but even some Democrats believe you change your positions based on political expediency.

“You were against same-sex marriage. Now you’re for it. You defended President Obama’s immigration policies. Now you say they’re too harsh.

“You supported his trade deal dozen of times. You even called it the ‘gold standard’. Now, suddenly, last week, you’re against it.

“Will you say anything to get elected?”

Clinton responded: “Well, actually, I have been very consistent.

“Over the course of my entire life, I have always fought for the same values and principles, but, like most human beings, including those of us who run for office – I do absorb new information. I do look at what’s happening in the world.

“I have a range of views, but they are rooted in my values and my experience. And I don’t take a back seat to anyone when it comes to progressive experience and progressive commitment.”
