Another soap confirms trans character, following EastEnders reveal
A second British soap has revealed a transgender character will be joining the cast – after EastEnders made a reveal.
This week the BBC revealed that 21-year-old actor Riley-Carter Millington would join EastEnders – the first time that a trans actor would play a trans character on the soap.
He will play Kyle, a mysterious character who will join the soap’s cast before the end of the year.
However, EastEnders isn’t the only game in town – and a second soap has revealed that it too will add a trans character.
It was revealed that Annie Wallace is joining the cast of Channel 4’s Hollyoaks as a trans teacher. Wallace tweeted: “Yes, it’s out. I’m joining Hollyoaks this month!”
It comes after Paris Lees broke the news, writing in the Guardian: “Hollyoaks is set to introduce its first continuing transgender character later this month, a teacher, played by Annie Wallace.
“Wallace, too, is trans, although Hollyoaks – which quietly had Rebecca Root on the show in a non-trans role earlier this year – isn’t making a song and dance about it.
“Wallace has been acting on British television for the past five years in what we call ‘stealth’ – keeping your mouth shut about your transition. She felt she had to. In 2015 she’s changed her mind.”
It’s the latest in a string of LGBT plots on the soap – which recently set a storyline around a ‘Hollypride’ pride event.
