The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that a MAC cosmetics ad featuring Miley Cyrus was sexually suggestive but not generally offensive.

The campaign featured Miley Cyrus wearing a bodysuit emblazoned with jewels, and her legs up against a mirrored wall.

The ad was featured in shopping malls and posters on the underground.

Complaints included that it was overtly sexual, and that it was visible to children.

The ad was defended by MAC Cosmetics, saying it featured the Wrecking Ball singer in a “confident pose”, and that it was intended to draw viewers to her “defiant stare”.

The ASA ruled that, despite the ad being sexually suggestive, it was not enough to cause widespread offence.

“While we considered that the images in all three posters were sexually suggestive, we concluded however, that they were not overtly sexual and unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence,” said the ASA.

The ASA also noted that the ad was not shown within 100m of a school – MAC Cosmetics also stipulated this when it commissioned the campaign.

The 22 year-old singer – who recently came out as pansexual – announced that she would provide a song for an LGBT film featuring Julianne Moore.
