A gay couple could become the first to win The X Factor after blowing away the judges.

The Shures – comprising of Chris Kennedy, 28, and Gabriel Cabrera, 32 – are a couple from Milton Keynes who fell in love after meeting on a “karaoke website”.

They told judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Fernandez-Versni, Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw how they met after Gabriel critiqued one of Chris’ performances.

“He said I needed to work on my vibrato. I didn’t take it too well,” he said.

The pair went on to wow both the judges and the 3000 strong audience, with a rendition of Ellie Goulding’s ‘Love Me Like You Do’.

Even Mr Nasty himself cracked a smile – although his reaction was not as love-filled as the band’s performance.

“Gabriel you are the better singer in my opinion and I guess your voices do work well together but I think that when he took the lead, the song was much, much better,” he said to a chorus of jeer and boos.

However, luckily for the lovebirds, the rest of the panel did not agree, with openly gay judge Nick Grimshaw leaping to their defence.

“It felt like you meant it and there was so much sincerity in it and I think that’s why everyone liked it in here,” he said.

“I could feel the love coming off you.”

“In my opinion it was so authentic that you forgot anyone else ever said it,” says Cheryl,

Rita Ora goes one step further, crediting the pair as a “prime example” of why marriage equality is so important.

“You are a prime example to our generation and I am so glad gay marriage was legalised in this country,” she bleats.

The X Factor will soon be moving onto the bootcamp round, before heading to the judge’s houses. If the pair succeed, then they will be the first married gay couple to do so.

As the new series of X Factor started, thousands of readers were directed to articles on PinkNews about Grimshaw, after searching for the term ‘is Nick Grimshaw gay?’

However, fellow openly gay presenter Graham Norton will not be watching this year – after claiming the show “had lost its way”.
