Ellen Page hits out at Republican Presidential wannabes: ‘They seem like homophobic people’
Juno actress Ellen Page has hit out at two of the Republicans running to be President – branding them “homophobic people”.
The actress, who came out as gay last year, cornered anti-gay Presidential wannabe Ted Cruz last month as he was flipping burgers for a campaign photo op at the Iowa State Fair – and proceeded to grill him about his homophobic beliefs.
Cruz later branded Page a “fascist” – but the actress hit back at him this week in an interview, claiming that he refuses to dodges any questions on LGBT rights.
She also poured scorn on Mike Huckabee, who along with Cruz has championed the cause of Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, who was jailed for contempt of court after ignoring orders to let same-sex couples marry.
Speaking to the Daily Beast, Page said of the Cruz incident: “It was like something out of Kurt Vonnegut or some Orwellian situation.
“And then I just started to ask him questions out of genuine curiosity. Here’s the thing: I’ve seen multiple videos and read multiple quotes of Ted Cruz discussing gay issues, as well as Mike Huckabee, and it goes exactly as you’d expect.
“They don’t answer the question. They say you’re cutting them off when you try to ask the same question again because they’re not answering it, because the reality is that they might be homophobic people.
“To me, it seems like they’re homophobic people.
“We live in a culture where even the majority of young Republicans are in favour of same-sex marriage – and I mean Republican constituents, not the people running for president – and I don’t know what to say other than it went exactly as expected.
“It just goes to ISIS and Iran and who knows where.”
