Demi Lovato has said she is “not confirming or denying” speculation – after being asked if her new song was about experimenting with women.

The 23-year-old singer songwriter was awfully coy while appearing on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man, talking about her new single Cool For The Summer.

The song includes a number of suggestive lyrics, including: “Got a taste for the cherry/I just need to take a bite”, and “I’m a little curious, too / tell me if it’s wrong, if it’s right / I don’t care /I can keep a secret, can you?”

She was quizzed about the meaning, with the host speculating: “I think it’s got a bit of a sinister message – well, not sinister…

“I put it to you, Miss Lovato, that that song is about lesbianism! Can you confirm or deny this accusation?”

She responded: “I’m not confirming, and I’m definitely not denying” – before adding: “All of my songs are based off of personal experiences. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimentation at all.”

Carr, who is openly gay, joked: “The trouble is I experimented once and it stuck.”

The singer enigmatically replied: “Hey, I didn’t say it didn’t stick either!”

She would not be the first singer in recent months to open up about her sexuality through a song – former child star Miley Cyrus recently confirmed that she is pansexualand released a free song that includes graphic details of her sexual encounters with women.

Speaking about why it seems to be a trend for female singers but not men, Lovato added: “I don’t think there’s anything wrong, if a very popular male artist came, and in one of his songs said ‘I’m experimenting’.

“If a guy sang this song who was straight, it would be such an uproar! There’s a confidence to a man who would say ‘I’ve experimented with men’ and not care,

“I actually find that more attractive than somebody saying ‘no, that’s so wrong!’.”
