The first posters for transgender period drama The Danish Girl have been released.

Oscar winning actor Eddie Redmayne has taken on the role of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe for the film directed by Tom Hooper, who also helmed Oscar winners Les Miserables and The King’s Speech.

Redmayne in 2014 portrayed Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

He undertook the slow process of learning how to live with motor neurone disease as Hawking and this time around he researched trans issues, and how it would have been to be transgender in the 1920s.

The film is based on a true story, and Lili was originally a landscape painter, who realised that she was transgender after posing in women’s clothes for her wife.

Einar went on to undergo one of the first gender reassignment surgeries, before living out her life as Lili Elbe.

The Danish Girl has a release date of 1 January 2016 – in the middle of awards season.

The poster has officially been released, after images were leaked earlier this year.

Last month, writing for PinkNews, Naith Payton considered whether trans characters, such as Elbe, should be played by cis actors.
