The lead singer of the Foo Fighters has explained why the band recently ‘RickRolled’ the infamous hate group.

Dave Grohl has addressed the moment he and his Foo Fighters band mates ‘Rickrolled’ unsuspecting homophobic protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church.

Grohl – who was filmed enthusiastically clapping as the perplexed “God hates f*gs” group looked on – revealed the band’s reason for the stunt to fans that night.

The musician said he was told about the picket shortly before taking to the stage – and could not resist dishing up a bit of 80s themed retaliation.

“You can’t just sit there and do nothing – you gotta say what you wanna say. So we did.” he said.

“And I said, ‘Cool, let’s go out and f**king hang out with them for a bit.’

“So we didn’t have enough time to put together the big old show that we put on last time, so we figured, you know what, why don’t we just f**king RickRoll their ass?” he added.

“Cause nothing says love like a little Rick Astley in your life, you know what I’m saying? Never gonna give his ass up!”

For those unfamiliar with the term, ‘Rick Rolling’ involves surprising someone with Astley’s epically cheesy hit – which the Foo Fighters did, surrounded by hordes of cheering fans.

This isn’t the first time Dave Grohl and his bandmates have tackled Westboro Baptist Church head on – they also upstaged the anti-gay group back in 2011.
