This admitted ex-homophobe pretended to be gay for an entire year, to find out how the community around him would react.

Timothy Kurek undertook the project in 2012 as research for a book.

Describing himself as a “bible banging homophobe”, Kurek says he wanted to learn true empathy for the very people he persecuted.

He discusses his journey in the TedX talk ‘Relearning the Practice of Intentional Empathy’.

“When his experiment ended he had managed to change not only his way of thinking about the homosexuals and any other person who could be different, but also his family’s way of thinking, making of himself a living example of the verse ‘Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you’ Ephesians 4:32”, the description on the talk reads.
