Caitlyn Jenner ‘giving voice’ to trans women of colour on her blog
Caitlyn Jenner has handed her blog to a trans woman of colour – in a bid to raise issues beyond those experienced by rich, white trans women.
In a post entitled, “Meet My Friend, Blossom,” Miss Jenner introduces Blossom Brown- the first transgender woman to have the spotlight on her personal website.
After touching on her youth, Miss Brown writes about serious issues, saying: “We need to reduce the number of murders of transgender women of color.
“There is not one day where I don’t wake up, get dressed, and think that I might be a target.
“Transgender women of colour are misgendered in the media all the time.
“Plus, the media often makes it seem like we deserve to be murdered.
“Supposedly we ‘aren’t being honest about who we are’ — when in reality, we are most likely being punished for being who we are and by telling our truths.”
Caitlyn Jenner met Ms Brown, who will soon graduate from the Mississippi University of Women, at a San Francisco HRC facility.
While Ms Brown is earning her degree, many nursing programs have so far turned both her and her dreams to improve LGBT public health down.
She said: “It kind of dawned on me that the most likely reason is because I’m trans.
“I started publicly transitioning the year I applied to nursing school and I think that negatively affected the school’s decision. . .
“I want to go into public health nursing and focus my work on the LGBT community general.
“I feel like we’re the ones that need the most help — especially the transgender community.
“I’m a trans health advocate and I want to develop resources and mentorships for them.”
Even though she pushed herself to earn higher GPAs and apply to more schools, her goals have still been stifled by bigotry.
As she advances through her own obstacles, Blossom Brown wants to reassure others in the LGBT community that they can still achieve their ambitions.
She said: “We all have major setbacks, but they are only setups for a major comeback.
“We deserve to be here, just like everyone else.
“Never cheat yourself out of this world because people refuse to accept you.
“Continue to live your truth, embrace yourself, and keep your head held high.
“We are beautiful, smart, and outgoing people and we will survive!”
Jenner has been under fire lately for being sheltered from LGBT reality with conservative views.
Possibly, as Miss Jenner focuses her media power more on her community, she’ll understand why others, like Raven Symone, want her to learn and spread the truth about LGBT issues.
As of now, her show’s ratings are dwindling, which may indicate the need for change.
