New video celebrates ‘the sissy’
A new video has gathered together the best examples of ‘the sissy’ – a character type associated with effeminate, over-the-top gay men.
The video shows Matt Baume charting the changing face of the sissy; from the Cowardly Lion in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to more contemporary examples like Freddie and Stuart in ‘Vicious’ and Titus in Netflix’s ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’.
This celebration of the sissy is something of a protest to the negative reception these characters have as being stereotypical or offensive.
Baume also hosts the podcast ‘The Sewers of Paris’, in which he interviews gay men about the popular culture that impacted their lives.
