Elaine Paige has gone from musical theatre to matchmaking – after helping a man propose to his partner live on air.

We always hear about those perfect engagement stories – whether they’ve hidden the ring in a soufflé, or turned into John Cusack from Say Anything holding up a stereo – but one couple had a little help from one of their favourite celebrities.

Keith and Pieter are regular listeners to Elaine Paige’s radio show on Radio 2 – tuning in every Sunday.

But regular listener Keith got a little more then a shock when the presenter called him up live on air – after agreeing to help out Pieter with his proposal.

She read out a beautifully heartfelt email from his partner Pieter, writing to say how “every day with Keith is better then watching our favourite musical – Priscilla Queen of the Desert.”

Just like many of the listeners, our host started to go when the letter continues to look at their love, saying that “being with Keith means that silence can be just as comfortable as a full on debate as whether Imelda Staunton will win an Olivier award,” and how “happiness is seeing Keith giving me a wink across the room.”

“Love is life with Keith…this isn’t a dress rehearsal – this is it.”

With theatrical flair Paige revealed that the email’s author Pieter was on the other line and had “something he’d like to add.”

Pieter then pops the all important question and asks Keith to marry him – to which Keith happily accepts.

The host told the lovebirds that she’d get her hat ready for the wedding – and that she’d be there.

Elaine Paige on Sunday airs on BBC Radio 2 at 1PM
