I am Cait hailed for focussing on something more important than Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner and her biopic series ‘I am Cait’ have been praised for focussing on an important subject and not just the star’s personal life.

Jenner was praised when the series premiered on Sunday on E!, because she took the time to highlight violence against transgender women.

While many expected the show to be all about Jenner’s personal, and not unimportant journey, she was heavily praised by many for drawing attention to eleven trans women who have been murdered in the US alone in 2015.

“I feel bad that these, especially young people, are going through such a difficult time in their life,” said Jenner in the opening scenes.

“We don’t want people dying over this. We don’t want people murdered over this stuff.”

Trans journalist Janet Mock tweeted her praise for Jenner, and a list of the names of the eleven murdered women.

Last Wednesday morning, India Clarke became at least the 11th trans woman in the US to be murdered in 2015.

As well as focussing on her own journey with some dramatic moments, such as when she revealed her transioned self to her daughter Kylie via video chat by mistake, Jenner’s story was also mixed with mentions of those who are not in the spotlight.

Jenner mentions younger trans people, such as 14-year-old Kyler Perscott, who killed himself in May, and meets with his family.

“It’s so hard for young people because they don’t see the future,” Jenner says. “Because of that they become extraordinarily desperate.”
