Kelvin Thomson is the latest Australian MP to back equal marriage

Sarah Charlton June 22, 2015

Australian MP Kelvin Thomson is the latest to declare that he is now in favour of same-sex marriage.

The MP for the Division of Wills in Victoria, announced his change of heart on ABC radio this morning, and the decision was confirmed by his office to the Marriage Equality convener, Shawn Callahan.

“On behalf of the many marriage equality supporters in the Wills electorate, I thank Kelvin Thomson for his decision to support marriage equality,” Mr Callahan said.

Mr Thomson acknowledged that, having previously voted against this matter, it was time for his position to reflect the public’s changing attitude.

Rodney Croome, the Australian Marriage Equality national director said: “With several MP’s declaring for marriage equality in recent weeks, a majority is in sight.”

Having given clues to his position on Facebook, Mr Thomson made his decision on his first day back in parliament, after suffering a heart attack almost two months ago.

Efforts to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia have so far failed, however there have been increasing calls for gay and lesbian couples to have the right to get married.

Over 180,000 people have said they will celebrate the day a Christian couple file for divorce if same-sex marriage is passed in Australia.
