This trans woman just became the first to sing at a professional sporting event
Opera singer Breanna Sinclairé made history earlier this week by becoming the first trans woman to sing at a professional sporting event.
Sinclairé sang the national anthem at an Oakland Athletics’s baseball game against the San Diego Padres.
She was also the first out trans woman to graduate from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
The singer was given the honour at the LGBT night at the Oakland Coliseum.
“I know it’s early, but I think Caitlyn definitely opened a lot of minds,” Sinclairé said, acknowledging the significance of her performance. “Sports are such a heteronormative world, and maybe my singing the anthem will open it some more.”
Sinclairé is a soprano with a four-and-a-half octave range. She got the gig by submitting a demo to the PR team at the Oakland As.
During the game, the Oakland team beat the Padres 16-2.
