An evangelist bishop has said he thinks homosexuality is a “mental illness” which he can cure.

Bishop Tom Brown spoke at the evangelist church River of Love on Friday in Malta.

According to the Times of Malta, Bishop Brown said he thought it was a “mental illness” which can be cured.

He has been accused of spreading hate speech in the US after having suggesting that same-sex attractions are an illness which can be cured.

Bishop Brown attended the church to preach specifically about his views on homosexuality.

Previously, when faced with research from the World Health Organisation and American Psychological Association suggesting that staying in the closet can have negative affects on people’s health, he said: “You’re just making this up.”

He has also made unfounded claims that gay men live shorter lives and are more prone to depression.
