Kenyan governor says homosexuality ‘will not be tolerated’
The governor of Uasin Gishu says homosexuality will not be tolerated in his county.
Jackson Mandago was speaking at celebrations for Madaraka Day, which commemorates Kenyan self-government. He reportedly told his audience, according to the Kenyan Star “a house used by the homosexuals in Eldoret had been identified and will be shut down”.
Mr Mandago said: “You can form your associations or groups but please operate from elsewhere.
“Currently, the ratio of men to women is one to seven. As a man what reason do you have to engage in homosexuality?”
He also suggested university students were being tempted into “immoral lifestyles”. “Some parents take their children to college but never follow up to know how they get along.
“As a parent you have to know where your child gets money to pay rent and buy things you didn’t budget for.”
Last month, a tabloid in Kenya published a list of “top homos“.
This comes just a month after Kenya’s High Court ruled that the government can no longer block LGBT groups from formally registering their organisations.
In December last year, a court in the country established a precedent that affirms basic rights for intersex people.
Last year the president of Kenya signed a law legalising heterosexual polygamy, while maintaining a ban on gay sex.
