Gay UKIP mayoral hopeful cleared of sexual assault allegations
A gay UKIP candidate who was charged following a sexual assault on a homeless Bulgarian man has been acquitted.
Peter Lello was arrested on 15 May 2014, accused of sexual assault on the evening of 2 May or early hours of 3 May at an address in Lewisham, London.
He had been standing in the Lewisham mayoral elections at whcih Mr Lello was standing for UKIP.
At a hearing on 15 May this year at Woolwich Crown Court, the Crown Prosecution Service said it offered no evidence, and that the 44-year-old would be found formally not guilty of sexual assault.
Following the hearing, Mr Lello said: “This has been an extremely difficult year but with the support from UKIP friends and colleagues justice has prevailed.”
UKIP Greenwich & Lewisham Chairman Paul Oakley said: “Peter’s innocence was never doubted by those of us who know him.”
