Model Andreja Pejic has become the first out trans person to be profiled by Vogue magazine.

Pejić, who began modelling in 2007, came out as trans in July.

The model been famed for her androgynous appearance in the past, and last year co-starred in a David Bowie music video alongside Tilda Swinton.

In the interview with the American edition of Vogue, the Serbian star talks about the issues she faced around her transition, and about those she faced as a child.

“Society doesn’t tell you that you can be trans. I thought about being gay, but it didn’t fit… I thought, ‘Maybe this is just something you like to imagine sometimes. Try to be a boy and try to be normal’.”

Having walked runways for both men’s and women’s shows, and for Gaultier and Marc Jacobs, Pejic is taking the fashion world by storm.

Writing on Instagram, Pejic said: “If at the beginning of my career in the modelling industry or half way through it or even this time last year you told me that I would end up having a 4 page feature in AMERICAN VOGUE I would have probably told you ‘oh I dunno about that! That might be a bit difficult to achieve in the near future.’ In fact I was told by various people many times over that the chances of me ending up on these pages were slim to none.

“So you can only imagine what I’m feeling right now! Thank you#AnnaWintour,#TonneGoodman, #PatrickDemarchelierand#HelenaSuric for making history and having me be part of it but even more importantly for representing a whole social minority and an often forgotten community of women in such an important publication and opening doors for the rest of the fashion industry to do so!”

Meanwhile, bodybuilder and model Aydian Ethan Dowling may become the first out trans man to grace the cover of Men’s Health magazine.
