Watch: You won’t believe what the Russian Army is marching to

Nick Duffy April 17, 2015

Russia is a country that has built itself on a macho reputation – and usually its armed forces are no different.

That’s why this clip of soldiers in the country drilling to ‘Barbie Girl’ is so surprising.

The footage – which was shot a number of years ago but recently surfaced again online – shows soldiers marching to Aqua’s camp 1997 classic.

They chant: “I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world, life in plastic, it’s fantastic!

“You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere! Imagination, life is your creation.”

The soldiers then recreate the original hit’s chorus – with the drill instructor shouting “Come on Barbie, let’s go party!” and the soldiers replying “Aah aah aah, yeah”

We’re not quite sure whether this violates the country’s own ‘gay propaganda’ law, which bans the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality – but it must come pretty close.

It’s not the first time the Russian Army have shown their feminine side.

At Eurovision in 2009, the Russian Army Choir appeared as a Semi-final interval act alongside pop band t.A.T.u and a giant pink flowery tank, serving as backing singers for their ‘faux-lesbian’ hit Not Gonna Get Us.

It emerged earlier this week that Apple’s voice assistant Siri refuses to discuss homosexuality when speaking Russian.

Apple told PinkNews the issue was a “bug” – but when asked about same-sex marriage, Siri said ominously: “I will pretend I didn’t hear that”.

Russia’s ‘gay propaganda’ law effectively prohibits the showing of ‘non-traditional’ or homosexual relationships in any form to people under the age of 18 – and the country recently blocked the country’s main support group for teenagers who identify as LGBT under the law.
