ABC News has confirmed it is planning to air a “far-ranging” interview with Bruce Jenner – in which the former Olympian is widely expected to come out as transgender.

Supermarket tabloids in the US have intensely scrutinised reality star Bruce Jenner’s appearance for months, with InTouch magazine coming under fire for a crudely photoshopped photo of Jenner as a woman in January.

Rumours have been circulating for weeks that the reality star – who is a step-parent to the Kardashian sisters – has been preparing to publicly come out as trans in a pre-recorded interview with Diane Sawyer.

Today, ABC News confirmed that a special two-hour edition of 20/20 will air on April 24, in which Sawyer will have a “far-ranging and exclusive” interview with the star.

ABC has not specified the nature of the interview, but relatives of Jenner including mother Esther Jenner – have previously all-but-confirmed the former athlete’s gender transition.

At the height of media scrutiny in February, Jenner was involved in a three car pile-up on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, which killed one person and injured a number of others.

The star broke their media silence to comment on the crash, saying in a statement: “My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident.

“It is a devastating tragedy, and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them. I will continue to cooperate in every way possible.”
