Actor and comedian Stephen Fry has quit Instagram, saying he was “hounded off” the social media site.

Fry, who boasted almost a hundred-thousand fans on the site posted a blank image with the message: “Newspapers, as ever, suck all the joy out of everything. Closing down. It was, briefly, fun. Bye.”

He also posted an image with the words: “Hounded off. Goodbye”.

The QI host is well-known as one of the most prolific tweeters, amassing nearly 9 million followers.

However, he has announced that following his marriage to fellow comedian Elliott Spencer last year, he would take some time to himself off Twitter.

Earlier in 2014, he said he was to quit Twitter as he was “in a place” where he was advised not to use the microblogging platform.

Fry in January gave an impassioned response when asked what he would say to God, if he were to arrive at the gates of Heaven.
