Out Star Trek star Zachary Quinto has paid tribute to his late colleague Leonard Nimoy.

Mr Nimoy played the role of Vulcan first officer Spock in the original Star Trek TV series, while former ‘Heroes’ star Quinto took up the same role in the recent reboots.

Appearing on Conan, the actor paid a poignant tribute to his friend, who passed away from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease last month.

He said: “We were very, very close. Losing him was really difficult.

“I feel so grateful that I knew him and that he was such an instrumental figure in my life.

“He lived a beautiful life and a full life, and there really in the end was much more celebration of what he accomplished, and how many lives he touched in the world.

“He stood for such an ideal. He imbued that character with so many of his finest qualities, he really carried that energy through his life.

“He was an incredibly generous, thoughtful, talented man. He was a painter, and a poet, and a art collector and a philanthropist and a director and an actor.

“We really should all be so lucky to live half as fulfilled a life as he did.

“There’s sadness, but it’s tempered of the fullness of the night he lived.”
